An Interview With Our President

History is full of examples of leaders in business, science, and other fields who, through their ability to inspire and guide people, have made the world a better place.  We celebrate our nation’s highest elected office on Presidents’ Day, this year on February 15. With this upcoming celebration, especially in the midst of a challenging environment, we thought it a good opportunity to ask Tompkins Trust Company President and CEO Greg Hartz for his thoughts on the subject.

  1. Where do you look for inspiration?

I look up to people who have done inspiring things, so I enjoy biographies and stories of overcoming obstacles and achieving good outcomes. I find peace in working out, bicycling, walking, working outside, being outside, and nature and some of my most inspiring moments have been made while doing these things. Additionally, I find inspiration in prayer.

  2. What are your 3 favorite books or publications?

Unbroken, Miracle (movie – story of the ’80 Team USA hockey team, and Killer Angels

  3. Can you name a person who has had a tremendous impact on you as a leader?

My dad and my grandfather had a tremendous impact on me.  They lived their lives in a way that inspired me to want to emulate them by encouraging me to follow my interests. Most importantly, they believed in me and helped me to believe in myself in a subtle and unassuming manner.

  4. Where do the great ideas come from at TTC?

The people of Tompkins Trust Company - including our wonderful employees, customers, vendors, and industry experts.

  5. What are your favorite questions to ask those you lead?

    • How are you doing?
    • How is your team?
    • What do you think?
    • Where are we going and how do we get there?
