Tompkins Community Bank (Tompkins) and the Legacy Foundation are pleased to announce that three Tompkins County teachers were recognized with certificates and monetary awards for their outstanding efforts to improve education in their districts. This year’s Raymond Van Houtte Teacher Awards recipients are Ladeen Case and Michele Cappelli of RC Buckley Elementary School, and Lori Owens of Newfield School District.

Ladeen Case was honored for her commitment to inclusion in education. Currently teaching the 1st grade, her classroom is a warm, welcoming place where all students can learn. Ms. Case is continuously searching for ways to improve student learning and increase engagement, all while meeting the social and emotional needs of all of her students. It is a priority of hers to make lessons accessible to all students so that each of them feels successful throughout their day. Ms. Case is not only an exceptional teacher, but an exceptional human being.

Michele Cappelli was honored for her commitment to the students of RC Buckley Elementary. As a 4th grade teacher, Ms. Cappelli is happily working with or for students at all times. She regularly gives up her lunch, offering students a quiet space to eat and chat. When given the option of playing on the playground or taking a walk on the track with their teacher, many students will opt to walk and talk with Mrs. Cappelli. She is living proof that all students can achieve their maximum potential when given consistent expectations and an adult willing to help them every step of the way. Ms. Cappelli is more than an educator, she is an outstanding human being

Lori Owens was honored for her outstanding service to the Newfield School District. In her role as the District Clerk, Ms. Owens has been instrumental in creating efficiencies within the district office, and providing exceptional service to employees, students, and the community. Ms. Owens is credited for streamlining processes and improving communication throughout the school and community. Mrs. Owens is a reliable, kind, and knowledgeable asset to the Newfield School District.

Raymond Van Houtte Teacher Awards

Tompkins Community Bank established the Raymond Van Houtte Teacher Award in 1989 to honor the late Raymond Van Houtte, retired president of the Trust Company. The Trust Company honored him by creating a $25,000 endowment, with earnings on the endowment to be used to fund awards recognizing educators who have shown exceptional ability, effort, and results in improving primary and secondary education in Tompkins County. Since 1991, 101 educators have been recognized with certificates and monetary awards totaling over $75,000. Educators are nominated by individuals, principals, or district superintendents.
